Unlocking Black Friday: National Retailers With Steepest Discounts Revealed

Plenty of us wait until we think the best deals are available before purchasing Christmas gifts. If you are waiting for Black Friday sales, WalletHub has a breakdown of which national retailers will offer the steepest sales. They crunched the numbers and came up with their analysis by looking at 4,300 deals.

Christmas shopping season tends to be more stretched out this year than ever as Black Friday specials end up being weeks before the actual day, and giant retailers also have summer sales dubbed "Black Friday" deals.

National and local retailers offer great discounts when Black Friday rolls around. WalletHub looked at national retailers in local communities to find out which have the biggest discounts this year.

While we are writing about Black Friday, don't forget to shop at our local retailers on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. On both Black Friday and that Saturday, local retailers will have tons of sales, and many will extend the prices through Christmas.

WalletHub's analysis gathered many interesting facts, including that in 2023, 90.6 million people purchased items on Black Friday, while 76 million people went to an actual store to get the items on sale.

Whether you buy online, go to a store or both, WalletHub shows the store's average percentage of overall discounts.

#10  Best Buy

WalletHub shows Best Buy is in the top 10 overall for Black Friday deals, with an average discount of 28.43%.

In their analysis, WalletHub also points out that computers and phones are the number one choice among the shopping sectors, as 29% of all deals are concentrated in this sector.

#9   Target

The numbers for Target and Best Buy when it comes to total average discounts offered are pretty close. WalletHub shows that Best Buy has Black Friday deals, with an average discount of 28.43%, while Target's average is 28.65%.

WalletHub also found that of all discount categories, toys only rated at 7.82% of the deals out there for Black Friday shopping. Could that be part of the reason their numbers aren't higher? We will leave that up to the consumer.

#8   BJ's

If you are not familiar with BJ's, it is a membership-only warehouse club similar to Sam's Club or Costco. One big difference between Costco and BJ's is that BJ's will take coupons.

WalletHub shows that BJ's has Black Friday deals, with an average discount of 28.86%. While we don't have any Bj's stores in Louisiana, you can still shop online.

#7   Amazon

The retail giant has some deals for Black Friday, but it also has "Black Friday" sales throughout the year.

WalletHub shows that Amazon has Black Friday deals, with an average discount of 32.05%.

#6   The Home Depot

Home Depot has some great deals right now, just like our other retailers on the list, and they get a slightly better rating than Amazon.

#5    Walmart

If you shop at Walmart, there are deals to be had, but they did not come at the top of the list. Walmart has also started offering up to 65% flash deals during the year.

#4    Kohl's

Retailer Kohl's has surpassed giant Walmart to claim the number four spot on the list for overall discounts.

#3   Macy's 

Taking the number 3 slot when it comes to overage discounts this year, the winner for the spot is Macy's.

WalletHub shows that Belk has Black Friday deals, with an average discount of 72.68%.

#1    JCPenney

WalletHub shows that Beck has Black Friday deals, with an average discount of 76.20%.

This is the sixth time in the last ten years that JC Penney has earned the number one spot for the biggest discounts in WalletHub analysis.

WalletHub had the following to report about JC Penney's Black Friday sales this year,

JCPenney offers some steep discounts on extremely expensive items this year, too. If you’re ready to propose to that special someone, you can get an $18,749.98 diamond engagement ring for just $3,799.99. In addition to significant markdowns on jewelry and apparel, JCPenney has great deals on appliances, offering savings of 58.5% on average.
