Rounding out its first year in the Benson neighborhood, Shaheen's Afghan Cuisine (6121 Maple St.) is eager to introduce new flavors to Omaha, combining authentic Afghan street food with friendly service in a spacious, welcoming environment."We've been in Omaha for about four years now, offering authentic Afghan food," Executive Manager Omed Shah said. "We recently opened this location in March."Using bold Afghan spices, Shaheen's elevates signature Middle Eastern dishes like grilled meats and kabobs to new heights."What makes a difference is the spices," Shah said. "I would say Afghan spices are probably the most exotic."Among the menu's popular appetizers is Mantu, Afghan dumplings filled with ground beef and topped with seasoned lentils and yogurt."Most of the food you’d find is street food. We just want to bring the taste to Omaha and share our culture," Shah said.For the main course, another favorite is the Kabuli Pulao, featuring Basmati rice, lamb shanks, and a topping of raisins and carrots."Every Afghan family, I’d say, eats a rice dish with meat almost every night—it's a staple," Shah said.
