CLEVELAND, Ohio – Wolverine Packing Co. of Detroit is recalling approximately 167,277 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. Coli, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The recall affects more than 130 products. Here is the full product list.
The items were shipped to restaurant locations nationwide.
The fresh products have a use-by date of 11/14/2024, and the frozen products are labeled with production date 10 22 24. Products subject to recall bear EST. 2574B inside the USDA inspection mark.
The problem was discovered after the Minnesota Department of Agriculture reported a group of ill persons had said they consumed ground beef prior to their illness. A sample tested positive for E. coli O157.
To date, 15 case-patients have been identified with illness onset ranging from Nov. 2 to Nov. 10.
E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Most people recover within a week, but some develop a type of kidney failure.
Restaurants are urged not to serve the products, which should be thrown away or returned to place of purchase.
All raw meat products - fresh and frozen – should be cooked to 160 degrees to kill harmful bacteria. Use a food thermometer to check internal temperature. Here’s the USDA guidelines on safe cooking.
