Man charged after grabbing 12-year-old girl at bus stop in Grand Rapids, police say

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A man is accused of grabbing a 12-year-old girl while she was waiting at the bus stop and attempting to sexually assault her, Grand Rapids police said.

The 25-year-old man has been charged with attempted second-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping, according to a news release from the Grand Rapids Police Department.

The incident took place around 7 a.m. on Nov. 19 near Ball Avenue NE and Bradford Street NE, according to police.

He allegedly dragged her across the street while attempting to sexually assault her. The girl was able to escape, and she ran home. Her mother contacted police, and the suspect was later taken into custody.

MLive is not naming the man pending arraignment.

Larry Johnson, Chief of Staff & Executive Director of Public Safety & School Security, alerted GRPS families and staff of the “deeply concerning incident” Tuesday, Nov. 19.

“While waiting for the bus, a scholar was approached by a suspicious individual,” Johnson wrote in a letter to the school community. “Thankfully, the scholar is safe, and the Grand Rapids Police Department has a suspect in custody. We are working closely with police as they investigate this matter.”
