Man arrested for stealing, crashing Buckeye city work truck; 2 officers hurt

Major traffic closure along Baseline Road between W. 1st Avenue and E. 1st Avenue

BUCKEYE, AZ (AZFamily) — Buckeye police say a suspect is in custody after reportedly stealing and then crashing a city work truck from a job site and then crashing it nearby early Thursday morning.

Buckeye police spokesperson Clarissa Planalp says officers were called around 10 a.m. after they were told a man had stolen the truck near Baseline Road and Central Boulevard, where construction crews were actively working.

A short time later, a suspect, who has not yet been identified, crashed the truck into a vehicle that was parked about one block away.

The suspect tried to run away at that point, but a city employee helped detain him as officers arrived. Then, the suspect allegedly assaulted two Buckeye police officers as he was taken into custody.

The officers suffered minor injuries, but one of them had to be taken to the hospital for treatment, officials said.

Baseline Rd is closed between W. 1st Avenue and E. 1st Avenue as the investigation takes place.

No other information has been released. It’s not yet known when the road could reopen, so drivers are urged to find an alternate route.
