GAITHERSBURG, Md. — The Montgomery County Department of Police has charged 45-year-old Agustin E. Jaramillo Lopez with negligent manslaughter by vehicle following a July crash that killed 39-year-old Isaac Akomanyi of Germantown.
The collision occurred on the night of July 20, 2024, on North Frederick Avenue near Travis Avenue. Police say Jaramillo Lopez, driving a black 2022 Ram 1500 pickup truck, rear-ended Akomanyi’s 2016 Nissan Altima at excessive speed after the Nissan turned onto the roadway from a nearby parking lot.
The force of the impact caused both vehicles to leave the road and strike a tree. Akomanyi was transported to an area hospital but later died from his injuries. A passenger in the Nissan and Jaramillo Lopez were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit revealed that Jaramillo Lopez had been traveling at a top speed of 98.2 mph in a 40-mph zone and struck the Nissan at approximately 79.5 mph. Additionally, his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.159, nearly twice the legal limit, an hour after the crash.
Jaramillo Lopez now faces charges of negligent manslaughter by vehicle and other related offenses as authorities continue their efforts to hold reckless and impaired drivers accountable.
